Closing the Gap Between the Loading Bay and the Ledger

A multi-plant food manufacturer eliminated manual weight capture from its Figtree-plant supply chain, connecting the weighbridge directly to SAP S/4HANA so goods movement is validated the moment it happens, not reconciled after the fact.

The Challenge

Figtree-plant stock transfers are the circulatory system of a multi-plant manufacturer. Raw materials, packaging and finished goods move constantly between production sites, and every gram matters to cost control. But the weighbridge, the single physical point where a truck's actual load is measured, sat outside SAP entirely. Drivers arrived, got weighed, and someone, eventually, typed the result into the system. Between the physical weighing and the system record sat a manual step: a paper ticket, a delay, and a chance for the two to quietly disagree.

That gap is where inventory accuracy erodes. A truck's gross and net weight recorded on paper does not automatically reconcile with what SAP thinks moved between plants, and standard SAP S/4HANA, like most ERPs, has no off-the-shelf weighbridge module. Left alone, this is exactly the kind of unglamorous manual step that undermines cost control without ever showing up as one dramatic failure, just a slow, permanent drag on inventory confidence.

How Newen Helped

Newen integrated the plants' weighbridge systems directly with SAP S/4HANA using SAP Cloud Integration middleware, re-using SAP's standard delivery Application Programming Interfaces (APIs) rather than building a parallel system. The result: at the supplying plant, an outbound delivery for an Figtree-plant stock transfer automatically receives the truck's tare and gross weight and vehicle details the moment it crosses the weighbridge. At the receiving plant, the same data flows back to validate the delivery and post the goods receipt, again the instant the truck weighs out. No spreadsheet, no rekeying, no end-of-day catch-up.

The rollout was phased deliberately. Phase 1 brought vendor-inbound and customer-outbound weighing live across four manufacturing units. Phase 2 extended the same real-time logic to Figtree-plant transfers between two of those plants. Rather than declare victory prematurely, the programme is now moving to embed weighbridge capture natively inside S/4HANA, retiring the external system it started with, and closing the loop completely.

The Results

Every truck that crosses a connected weighbridge today updates SAP in real time, at both ends of the transfer, with zero manual weight entry. Inventory teams get accurate goods-in-transit visibility instead of an overnight reconciliation exercise, and the finance close no longer waits on a paper ticket finding its way to a keyboard. The programme has moved from bolted-on integration to a native, embedded capability, exactly the trajectory you want from a logistics control: less middleware over time, not more.

Why it mattersThe most expensive step in any supply chain is usually the one nobody automated because it “always worked fine on paper.” It did not.
